All islands

Glass bottom boat tours are one of the most accessible ways to experience the underwater world of the Gili Islands. The traditional wooden boats have glass panels built into their hulls, allowing passengers to look directly down at the coral and fish as the boat glides over the reef. Perfect for families with children, non-swimmers, or anyone who wants a gentle introduction to the marine life without getting wet.

How it works

A typical glass bottom boat is a traditional wooden Indonesian vessel with one or more rectangular glass panels set into the floor of the seating area. Passengers sit on benches around the glass and look down into the water below. When the boat is positioned over a reef or snorkel spot, you can see coral, fish, and sometimes turtles clearly through the glass.

Most boats also offer snorkel stops during the tour for passengers who want to get in the water. Snorkel gear is provided, so you can mix viewing from the boat with actually swimming with the reef.

Where to book

Glass bottom boat tours depart from the main harbours of all three Gili Islands:

  • Gili Trawangan: Multiple operators at the east coast harbour
  • Gili Meno: Operators at the main east coast harbour
  • Gili Air: Operators at the south coast harbour

Your hotel can usually book a tour for you, or you can walk to the harbour and arrange one directly. Both group tours and private charters are available.

Tour types

Half-day group tour (most common)

Departs around 9:30am or 1pm, returns 3-4 hours later. Visits 2-3 reef sites and one snorkel spot. Includes snorkel gear and sometimes lunch. Typical cost: Rp 150,000-250,000 ($10-18) per person.

Three-island tour

A longer version visiting snorkel spots around all three Gilis with a lunch stop at one of them. Typical duration: 5-6 hours. Cost: Rp 250,000-400,000 ($18-28) per person.

Private charter

Rent a glass bottom boat for your group alone. Flexible schedule and stops. Cost: Rp 500,000-1,500,000 ($35-100) for a half or full day depending on group size and duration.

What you will see

Depending on the route and conditions:

  • Coral gardens and reef structures
  • Tropical fish (parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, clownfish, and many more)
  • Sea turtles (especially at dedicated turtle spots)
  • Blue-spotted stingrays resting on sandy patches
  • Occasional reef sharks in deeper areas
  • Schools of small baitfish near the surface

Visibility depends on sea conditions. Calm, sunny days give the best views. Windy or choppy days can make it harder to see clearly through the glass.

Why choose a glass bottom boat?

Glass bottom boats are ideal for:

  • Young children who cannot swim confidently or are nervous about the water
  • Older travellers who may find snorkelling physically challenging
  • Non-swimmers of any age
  • People with mobility issues
  • Anyone who just wants to stay dry while seeing the underwater world
  • Rainy days when snorkelling is less appealing
  • Mixed groups where some want to snorkel and others prefer to stay on the boat

The snorkel stops

Most glass bottom tours include opportunities to snorkel, so you can get the best of both worlds. The boat will anchor near a reef and give you 30-60 minutes to jump in with snorkel gear. You can choose to stay on the boat if you prefer.

If you are a capable swimmer and want to see the reef up close, the snorkel stops are the highlight. The glass bottom view is a bonus — the real magic happens when you are in the water.

Practical tips

  • Sun protection is critical. The boat has limited shade and you are on the water for hours. Hat, sunscreen, rashguard.
  • Bring water. Dehydration sneaks up on you in the tropical sun.
  • Waterproof phone case for photos
  • Motion sickness tablets if you are prone
  • Cash for extras (drinks, lunch upgrades, tips)
  • Swimwear under clothes for quick changes
  • Small dry bag for valuables

Family tips

For families with children:

  • Glass bottom boats are generally safe but make sure kids stay seated and away from edges
  • Most boats provide life jackets for children
  • Bring snacks — kids get hungry and cranky on boats
  • Cover children thoroughly with sunscreen and rashguards
  • Shorter half-day tours are usually easier with young kids than full-day trips
  • Watch for seasickness in young children — bring ginger chews or children's motion sickness medication

Responsible touring

Even from the boat, you should help minimise impact on the reef:

  • Choose operators who use mooring buoys rather than dropping anchor on coral
  • Don't feed fish or marine life
  • Don't touch or collect anything from the reef during snorkel stops
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen
  • Don't litter on the boat or in the water

Glass bottom boat tours are a gentle, accessible way to experience the biodiversity of the Gili reefs. They are not the most immersive way to see the marine life — snorkelling or diving wins for that — but they offer a different perspective and make the underwater world accessible to everyone. Pair a glass bottom tour with snorkel stops for the best of both.
