Getting There
The Gili Islands sit just off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. There are no airports on the islands, so you will need to take a boat. Here is everything you need to know about getting there.
Routes to the Gilis
From Bali (Padang Bai)
The most popular route. Fast boats depart from Padang Bai harbour on Bali's east coast. The journey takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours depending on the operator and sea conditions. Boats arrive at Gili Trawangan first, then Gili Meno, and finally Gili Air.
π‘ Tip: Book in advance during peak season. Sit at the back of the boat if you get seasick. The crossing can be rough during the wet season.
From Bali (Serangan / Sanur)
Several operators run fast boats from Serangan harbour near Sanur. This route is more convenient if you are staying in southern Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu) as it avoids the long drive to Padang Bai.
π‘ Tip: Check which harbour your boat departs from. Some operators include hotel pickup in their price.
From Lombok (Bangsal)
The cheapest and quickest way to reach the Gilis. Public boats depart from Bangsal harbour on Lombok's northwest coast throughout the day. Gili Air is closest (15 minutes), followed by Gili Meno (20 minutes) and Gili Trawangan (30 minutes).
π‘ Tip: Bangsal harbour can be chaotic. Ignore anyone who tells you the public boats are not running. Buy your ticket from the official ticket counter only.
From Lombok Airport
Lombok International Airport (LOP) receives direct flights from Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and several other cities. From the airport, it is about a 2-hour drive to Bangsal harbour, followed by the short boat crossing.
π‘ Tip: Some fast boat operators offer pickup from Lombok airport. This can save time and hassle compared to arranging your own transport to Bangsal.
From Nusa Lembongan / Penida
There is no direct boat from Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida to the Gilis. You will need to go back to Bali first and then catch a fast boat from there. Some operators offer combined tickets.
π‘ Tip: Plan this as a full travel day. Leave early from Nusa Lembongan to catch the afternoon fast boat from Bali.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to visit the Gili Islands?
The dry season runs from April to October and is the best time to visit. Skies are clear, seas are calm, and diving visibility is at its best. July and August are the busiest months. The wet season (November to March) brings occasional rain and rougher seas, but the islands are quieter and cheaper.
Do I need a visa to visit Indonesia?
Most nationalities can get a Visa on Arrival (VOA) for 30 days at Indonesian airports and seaports. The cost is around $35 USD and it can be extended once for another 30 days. Check the latest requirements for your nationality before travelling.
Is there Wi-Fi on the Gili Islands?
Yes, most hotels, cafes, and restaurants have Wi-Fi. Gili Air generally has the best connectivity. You can also buy a local SIM card with data in any of the small shops on the islands. Telkomsel usually has the strongest signal.
Are there ATMs on the islands?
There are ATMs on Gili Trawangan and Gili Air, but they charge higher fees and sometimes run out of cash. Gili Meno has very limited ATM access. Bring enough Indonesian Rupiah from Bali or Lombok to cover your stay, and keep some as backup.
Is the water safe to drink?
Tap water is not safe to drink. Buy bottled water or bring a refillable bottle with a filter. Many dive shops and eco-conscious businesses offer refill stations to reduce plastic waste.
How do I get between the islands?
Public boats run between the three islands throughout the day. The trip between any two islands costs around 30,000 to 50,000 IDR (about $2 to $3 USD) and takes 5 to 15 minutes. You can also hire a private boat for more flexibility.
