Each of the three Gili Islands has a distinct personality, and visiting all three in a single day is one of the most popular experiences for travellers. Trawangan is lively and busy, Meno is quiet and romantic, and Air is the balanced middle ground. A day of island hopping lets you sample each flavour before deciding which deserves more of your time.
Your options
Group snorkel tour (most popular)
The standard island-hopping experience is a guided snorkel tour that visits 3-5 spots around the three islands with lunch or a beach stop included. A typical day looks like:
- 9:30am โ Departure from Trawangan, Meno, or Air
- 10:00am โ First snorkel stop (often Turtle Point off Meno)
- 11:00am โ Second snorkel stop (often the Nest underwater statues)
- 12:00pm โ Lunch stop at one of the other islands
- 1:30pm โ Third snorkel stop (often a coral garden)
- 3:00pm โ Return to starting point
Cost: Rp 150,000-250,000 ($10-18) for group tours including gear. Extras like lunch or drinks are usually separate.
Private boat charter
For more flexibility, you can charter a private boat. This lets you set your own schedule, choose your own stops, and avoid the group dynamic. Good for families and small groups.
Cost: Rp 500,000-1,500,000 ($35-100) for a half or full day, depending on boat size and duration.
DIY public boat hopping
The cheapest option is to use the public boats that run between the three islands several times daily. You can island-hop independently at your own pace:
- Start early at your first island
- Take the morning public boat to the next
- Spend a few hours exploring and eating lunch
- Take the afternoon public boat to the third island
- Return on the last boat of the day
Cost: Rp 25,000-50,000 ($2-3.50) per leg. Total for a full day: about Rp 100,000-200,000 ($7-14).
Drawbacks: schedules are not always reliable, and you do not get the snorkel stops that organised tours include.
One-day itinerary suggestion
If you have only one day and want to sample all three islands, here is a suggested itinerary assuming you are starting from Trawangan:
Morning โ Trawangan to Meno
Catch the 9am public boat or a snorkel tour to Meno. Snorkel around Meno's coral wall or visit the underwater statues. Wade through the shallow turtle grounds on the east coast.
Midday โ Meno to Air
Take a boat to Gili Air. Have lunch at Mowie's, Pachamama, or any beachfront restaurant. The south coast is the main tourist area with plenty of options.
Afternoon โ Air exploration
Rent a bike for an hour and cycle around Gili Air. Visit the east coast beach for more turtle snorkeling, or explore the quieter north coast.
Sunset โ back to Trawangan
Return to Trawangan in time for sunset on the west coast. Grab a drink at Exile or Ombak Sunset bar and watch the sun drop behind Bali.
What each island is best for
- Gili Trawangan: Nightlife, sunset bars, dive shops, night market food, party atmosphere. The most infrastructure and variety.
- Gili Meno: Quiet romance, turtle sanctuary, underwater statues, secluded beaches. The most peaceful.
- Gili Air: Great food, yoga scene, local community, excellent snorkeling. The most balanced.
Tips for island hopping
- Start early โ most public boats stop running by 4-5pm
- Bring cash โ you can't pay with card for boat tickets or at many local places
- Wear swimwear under your clothes for quick changes
- Bring a dry bag for electronics and valuables
- Reef-safe sunscreen โ you will be on the water all day
- Snacks and water โ not all tours include food
- Take seasickness tablets if you are prone
The case for more than one day
Most travellers who do a one-day tour end up wishing they had more time on one or two of the islands. If you have a week or more, consider basing yourself on different islands for a few days each rather than trying to cram everything into one day. The experience is much richer.
