Sunset Watching

The west coast of the Gili Islands faces directly toward Bali and Mount Agung. The sunsets here are the stuff of Instagram dreams and travel memories.

Best on

Any west coast

Every evening around 5:30-6:30pm (depending on the season), the sun sinks behind Bali, silhouetting the conical peak of Mount Agung in the distance. The sky shifts through orange, pink, purple, and finally deep blue. The reflections on the calm ocean double the show. It is one of the great experiences of the Gili Islands and entirely free.

When is sunset?

Sunset times vary slightly through the year:

  • January - February: around 6:20pm
  • March - April: around 6:10pm
  • May - June: around 5:50pm
  • July - August: around 5:55pm
  • September - October: around 6:00pm
  • November - December: around 6:15pm

Arrive 30-45 minutes before sunset to get a good spot, watch the golden hour, and settle in before the main show.

Best sunset spots on Gili Trawangan

Ombak Sunset Swings

The famous west coast ocean swings at Hotel Ombak Sunset are the most photographed sunset spot in the Gilis. Wooden swings hang just offshore in shallow water. Wade out, climb on, and get the silhouette photo everyone chases. The attached bar serves drinks and has beach seating for non-swingers.

Exile Sunset Bar

Slightly further north on the west coast. Beanbags on the sand, mellow DJ sets, fresh cocktails, and an uninterrupted view. Less crowded than Ombak. A good alternative if the swings are too busy.

Casa Vintage Beach

On the northwest coast, this Instagram-famous beach bar has vintage swings, beanbags, and a bohemian aesthetic. The food is good and the setting is magical at golden hour.

Aston Sunset Beach Resort (Surfer Bar)

The beach bar at Aston Sunset has its own ocean swings and quality sunset cocktails. Non-guests are welcome. Slightly more upscale vibe.

Pearl Beach Lounge

The most upscale sunset dining experience on Trawangan. Refined Mediterranean menu, craft cocktails, and tables directly on the beach. Book ahead for a sunset table.

Sama Sama Reggae Bar

Not on the sunset coast, but the vibe peaks as the sun goes down. Grab a Bintang and watch the last light through the palm trees, then stick around for the live reggae starting around 9pm.

Best sunset spots on Gili Meno

Diana Cafe (Ocean Swings)

Meno's most famous sunset spot and home to some of the most iconic swings in the Gili Islands. Rustic, simple, and perfect. Just beanbags, cold drinks, and a stunning view with no crowds compared to Trawangan.

Mahamaya Beach Club

Upscale sunset cocktails at Meno's premier resort. Beanbags on the sand, quality drinks, and impeccable views of the sunset. Non-guests welcome.

BASK Beach Club

The luxury option. Stylish decor, craft cocktails, and one of the most refined sunset experiences in the Gili Islands. Book ahead.

Sunset Gecko area

The north-west coast near Sunset Gecko offers a completely uncrowded sunset experience. Bring a drink, find a spot on the beach, and enjoy it in near-solitude.

Best sunset spots on Gili Air

Mowie's Bar & Restaurant

The most famous sunset bar on Gili Air. Beanbags on the sand, excellent cocktails, and reliably magical sunsets. Gets busy at golden hour — arrive early for a good spot.

Zipp Bar

A more upmarket alternative to Mowie's, with a DJ playing mellow beats as the sun goes down. Fresh cocktails, stylish setup, slightly quieter crowd.

Pearl Beach Lounge Gili Air

Upscale beach club dining for a premium sunset experience. Mediterranean food and cocktails on a beautiful stretch of west coast beach.

Chill Out Bar

Hammocks, beanbags, and cold beers. Unpretentious and classic. One of the best places to really relax and enjoy the view without feeling the pressure of "doing" sunset.

Photography tips

  • Arrive 30-45 minutes before official sunset time for golden hour
  • Silhouette shots work best — expose for the sky and let people become shadows
  • The colours are often richer 10-15 minutes AFTER the sun has fully set, during the "blue hour"
  • Bring a phone tripod or grip for steady shots in low light
  • For swings, shoot from low angles to capture reflections
  • Don't fixate on photos — put the phone down and actually watch the sunset

What to bring

  • Something to drink (or buy at the bar)
  • Light layer — it can cool down slightly after sunset
  • Mosquito repellent — dusk is mosquito prime time
  • Camera or phone
  • Cash for drinks and snacks

The sunset ritual

One of the great gifts of the Gili Islands is the shared sunset ritual. Every evening, travellers and locals alike gravitate to the west-facing beaches. Strangers share beanbags, conversations spark, and the whole island seems to pause for an hour. It is not just the view that makes it special — it is the collective appreciation of a beautiful moment that happens whether you notice it or not.

Make time for sunset every single evening of your stay. It is the cheapest, most reliable joy the islands offer.
