The public boat service is the cheapest way to move between the three Gili Islands and to/from Lombok. Boats depart from the main harbour on Trawangan several times daily on fixed schedules, with separate services for inter-island hopping and the Lombok mainland run. Fares are very reasonable (a few dollars).
Boats are basic wooden vessels without fancy amenities, but they get the job done. This is how locals travel between the islands, and it is worth experiencing for the authentic atmosphere alone. Arrive at the harbour with enough time to buy a ticket and board.
