5 Day Gili Islands Itinerary for 2026: The Perfect Trip

By Gili Islands Team

Five days on the Gili Islands hits a sweet spot that shorter trips just can't match. You get enough time to properly experience all three islands without rushing, and you still have room for those lazy hammock afternoons that make the whole trip feel like a holiday rather than a checklist.

I've done this trip more times than I can count, and the rhythm I keep coming back to is two nights on Gili Trawangan for the buzz, two nights on Gili Meno for the calm, and one night on Gili Air to bridge the two moods. You can shuffle the order, but this sequence gives you the best flow and avoids doubling back on boat routes.

Here's the day-by-day breakdown.

Getting There

Most travellers reach the Gili Islands from Bali or Lombok. Fast boats from Bali depart from Padang Bai or Serangan and take around 90 minutes to two hours. From Lombok, boats run from Bangsal harbour or Teluk Nare and get you to the islands in 15 to 20 minutes.

Book your fast boat a day or two ahead during peak season (July, August, December). In the shoulder months you can usually just show up at the harbour, but having a confirmed ticket takes the stress out of arrival day.

For the full transport rundown, check our getting around guide.

Day 1: Arrive on Gili Trawangan and Find Your Feet

Where you're sleeping: Gili Trawangan

Most boats arrive on Gili T first, which works perfectly for this itinerary. Drop your bags, check in, and take a moment to register that you've just landed on an island with no cars, no motorbikes, and no traffic lights. The only engines you'll hear are on the boats.

Morning and Afternoon

If your boat gets in before noon, rent a bicycle from one of the shops near the harbour. The full loop around Trawangan takes about an hour at a relaxed pace, and it's the single best way to orient yourself on day one. The east side is where the bars, restaurants, and hostels cluster together. The west side is quieter, with long stretches of empty beach where you'll have the sand mostly to yourself.

Stop along the southern tip for your first swim. The water here is ridiculous. Crystal clear, warm, and calm enough that you can float on your back and stare at the sky without a care in the world.

Evening

For your first dinner, head to the main strip on the east coast and browse the restaurants on Gili Trawangan. You'll find everything from Indonesian warungs with 30,000 IDR nasi goreng to upscale beachfront seafood grills. The night market near the art market is brilliant for cheap, filling street food if you're watching your budget.

After dinner, wander the strip and you'll naturally stumble into the nightlife. Trawangan has the liveliest scene of the three islands, with different bars hosting events on rotating nights. Monday and Wednesday tend to be the biggest party nights, but there's always something going on.

Day 2: Diving, Beaches, and Trawangan's West Coast

Where you're sleeping: Gili Trawangan

Today is your deep dive into Trawangan, both literally and figuratively. If you've been thinking about trying scuba diving, this is one of the best places in Southeast Asia to take the plunge.

Morning

Book a discover scuba session or a fun dive with one of the dive shops on Gili Trawangan. The reefs around the Gili Islands are home to sea turtles, reef sharks, seahorses, and an incredible variety of coral. Even a beginner discover dive will get you face to face with green turtles within your first thirty minutes underwater. If you already have your PADI certification, ask about Shark Point or the Halik reef for bigger marine life encounters.

Not into diving? The snorkelling off the north coast of Trawangan is world-class and completely free. Rent a mask and fins from any shop on the main strip, walk to the northern beach, and wade in. Turtles are practically guaranteed. We're not exaggerating. You will see them.

Afternoon

Spend the afternoon on Trawangan's west coast beaches. This is the quiet side of the island that most day-trippers never reach. Bring a book, grab a coconut from a beach vendor, and settle in. The sunsets from here are some of the best in Indonesia, with the sky turning orange and pink behind Bali's Mount Agung on the horizon.

For a proper sunset experience, grab a spot at one of the west coast bars on Gili Trawangan. Arrive by 5pm to get a good seat because the good spots fill up fast.

Evening

Tonight, treat yourself to a proper sit-down dinner. Trawangan has levelled up its restaurant scene dramatically over the past few years, and you can eat genuinely excellent food without the Bali price tags. Fresh grilled fish, handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, and Indonesian classics done really well are all easy to find.

Day 3: Cross to Gili Meno and Discover the Quiet Side

Where you're sleeping: Gili Meno

This is the day your trip shifts gears. Grab the morning boat from Trawangan to Meno. The crossing takes about ten minutes and costs around 35,000 to 50,000 IDR on the public boats.

Morning

When you step off the boat onto Gili Meno, you'll feel the difference immediately. This is the smallest and most unspoilt of the three Gili Islands, and it has this raw, untouched quality that people describe as what happens when the Maldives meets the Greek islands. There are no party bars here. No crowds. Just white sand, turquoise water, and the sound of waves.

Check into your accommodation. Gili Meno has some of the most beautiful hotels and resorts in the entire archipelago. BASK is the standout, a luxury beachfront resort on the western shore that has completely redefined what island accommodation looks like in Indonesia. Their villas feature private pools, indoor-outdoor living spaces built with natural materials, and direct beach access. Even if you're not staying there, their beach club is worth visiting.

After dropping your bags, walk the island's perimeter. Gili Meno is small enough that you can do the full loop in about an hour. The western shore has the best beaches, with powdery white sand sloping into impossibly clear water. The eastern side is quieter still, with mangroves and a salt lake that's home to local birdlife.

Afternoon

This afternoon is for snorkelling the famous Nest, an underwater sculpture installation on Gili Meno's seabed. The sculptures were designed to encourage coral reef regeneration, and they've become one of the most photographed sites in all of Indonesia. You can swim out to them from the beach. It's a surreal experience, floating above these human figures as fish dart between them and coral slowly reclaims the stone.

For more about this incredible site, read our guide to the Gili Meno Nest sculptures.

Evening

Dinner on Gili Meno is a genuine highlight of the whole trip. Head to Pomona, a Latin-inspired beachfront restaurant right on the sand. The concept revolves around open-fire cooking and bold South American flavours, and the menu is 100% gluten free. Start with the ceviche mixto or the soft shell crab arepas, then move on to the picanha steak with chimichurri and stewed black beans. The vibe is communal and relaxed, with a soundtrack that sets the tone without drowning out conversation.

If it's a Friday, you'll catch Pomona Sessions, their weekly evening event that blends food, music, and beach energy. On Sundays, their beach BBQ from 3pm to 8pm is one of the best meals you'll have on the islands.

After dinner, walk along the beach. Gili Meno at night is something special. Without light pollution from cars and buildings, the stars are incredible, and on some nights the bioluminescent plankton lights up the shallow water along the shore.

Day 4: Meno Deep Dive, Beach Club, and Sunset

Where you're sleeping: Gili Meno

You've got a full day on Gili Meno, and the best thing you can do is slow right down. This isn't a day for ticking off sights. It's a day for living at island pace.

Morning

Start with breakfast at a beachfront spot. Check out the options at Gili Meno's restaurants and cafes. If you're at BASK, their breakfast service runs from 7am to 11am with ocean views from every table.

After breakfast, go snorkelling right off the beach. Gili Meno sits in some of the richest marine waters in Indonesia, and the reef along the north and west coast is teeming with life. Sea turtles are everywhere here, and on a good day you'll spot them within minutes of getting in the water. The visibility is often 20 metres or more, which makes even a casual paddle feel like swimming inside a nature documentary.

Afternoon

Spend the afternoon at the BASK Beach Club. Their 35-metre infinity pool overlooks the ocean, and the whole setup is designed for long, lazy afternoons. Grab a sun lounger or a daybed, order something cold, and let the hours melt away. Live DJs play through the afternoon into the golden hour, and the energy builds gently without ever tipping into anything loud or overwhelming.

This is also a perfect afternoon for a spa treatment if you want some proper relaxation. Gili Meno has several excellent massage and wellness spots, and there's nothing quite like a Balinese massage when you can hear the ocean through the treatment room walls.

Evening

Tonight, have dinner at BASK Restaurant and Bar. The kitchen runs an open-fire concept with daily fresh fish, flame-cooked steaks, wood-fired pizza, and coastal-inspired plates that blend Western and Asian influences. Bread is baked fresh each morning. The wine list is surprisingly deep for a tiny island, and the cocktail menu has some genuinely creative options.

After dinner, if you're in the mood for something different, find your way to Rosalee. Tucked beneath the main resort level, this underground cocktail bar is one of Gili Meno's best-kept secrets. Low lighting, candle-lit tables, and bartenders who treat every drink like a small work of art. Through a glass-lined wall, you can see the silhouettes of night swimmers in the pool above. It's the kind of place that makes you forget you're on a tiny coral island in the middle of the Indonesian archipelago.

Day 5: Gili Air, The Farewell Island

Where you're sleeping: Gili Air (or departing)

On your final full day, take the morning boat from Gili Meno to Gili Air. The crossing is quick, maybe five minutes, and drops you into a completely different atmosphere. Gili Air sits somewhere between Trawangan's energy and Meno's solitude. It has a bohemian, laid-back feel with a strong community of long-term travellers, yoga practitioners, and artists who've made the island home.

Morning

Drop your bags at one of the hotels on Gili Air or store them at a cafe near the harbour if you're catching an afternoon boat out.

Walk the eastern shore and find a spot for breakfast at one of the cafes on Gili Air. The cafe culture here is excellent, with smoothie bowls, freshly baked goods, and proper coffee made from locally sourced Indonesian beans. Gili Air attracts a slightly more wellness-focused crowd, and the breakfast menus reflect that.

Afternoon

If you have time, squeeze in one last activity. A yoga class on Gili Air is a brilliant way to close out your trip, or you could take a paddleboard out on the calm water for a final farewell float. The snorkelling off Gili Air's south coast is also excellent, with healthy coral gardens and plenty of marine life.

For lunch, explore the restaurants on Gili Air. The island has a fantastic mix of Indonesian, Mediterranean, and fusion cooking, with plenty of spots right on the water.

Late Afternoon and Departure

If you're heading back to Bali or Lombok, afternoon boats run regularly from Gili Air. Check your boat operator's schedule and aim to be at the harbour at least 30 minutes before departure.

If you have one more night, watch the sunset from the west coast of Gili Air. The views towards Gili Meno and Trawangan, silhouetted against the setting sun, are the perfect closing scene for five days on the islands.

How to Split Your 5 Days Differently

The 2-2-1 split I've laid out above is my favourite, but it's not the only way to do it. Here are some alternatives depending on your travel style:

Classic (above) Trawangan Meno Air First-timers, couples, foodies
Party First Trawangan (2 nights) Air (2 nights) Meno Social travellers, nightlife fans
Romance Focus Meno (3 nights) Trawangan Air Honeymoons, anniversaries

Wellness Air (2 nights) Meno (2 nights) Trawangan Yoga lovers, slow travellers

Tips for Making the Most of Your 5 Days

Book your first night in advance. Especially on Gili Trawangan during peak season. The rest you can figure out as you go, but having somewhere to drop your bags when you step off the boat makes the whole arrival smoother.

Bring cash. ATMs exist on Trawangan and Air but charge hefty fees and sometimes run dry. Meno has very limited ATM access. Bring enough Indonesian Rupiah for your trip and top up on Trawangan if needed. For more tips, read our money and currency guide.

Download offline maps. WiFi is decent at most hotels and cafes, but mobile data can be patchy. Having offline maps of each island saves a lot of wandering.

Don't over-schedule. The biggest mistake I see travellers make is trying to fill every hour. The Gili Islands reward those who leave space for spontaneity. Some of my best memories are from afternoons I had nothing planned and ended up sharing a sunset with strangers who became friends.

Pack light. You'll be carrying your bags on and off boats, and the paths on all three islands are sandy. A backpack or soft bag is far easier than a hard suitcase. For our full packing list, check the what to pack guide.

Protect the reefs. Use reef-safe sunscreen, don't touch or stand on the coral, and never chase marine life. The Gili Islands' underwater world is what makes this place special, and keeping it healthy is everyone's responsibility. Read more in our eco tourism and conservation guide.

Why 5 Days Is the Sweet Spot

Three days on the Gili Islands always feels rushed. A week is lovely if you have the time. But five days gives you the perfect window to experience all three islands with enough depth that you actually feel like you've been somewhere, not just passed through.

You get the nightlife and social buzz of Trawangan. You get the peace and natural paradise of Meno, with world-class dining that rivals anywhere in Indonesia. And you get Gili Air's relaxed, bohemian spirit to round things out. By day five, you'll be tanned, rested, and already thinking about when you can come back.

And honestly? Most people who come for five days end up wishing they'd booked a week. So if your schedule allows it, throw in an extra night on whichever island steals your heart. My bet is on Meno.

Start planning your trip by browsing our island guides and directories to find the best restaurants, hotels, and activities for your style. See you on the sand.
