Gili Islands and Lombok: Plan the Perfect Trip in 2026
Most people treat Lombok and the Gili Islands as separate trips. That's a mistake. These two destinations sit right next to each other, and combining them gives you one of the best travel experiences in Southeast Asia. You get volcanic mountains, rice terraces, world-class surf, and some of the most beautiful underwater scenery in Indonesia, all in a single holiday.
I've done this route multiple times now, and every time I wonder why more travellers don't plan it this way. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Lombok and the Gili Islands Belong in the Same Trip
The three Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno, and Air) float just off Lombok's northwest coast. You can see Lombok's Mount Rinjani from the beach on any of them. The boat ride between Lombok's harbours and the Gilis takes about 15 to 25 minutes, depending on conditions and which island you're heading to.
What makes the combination so good is the contrast. Lombok gives you rugged coastline, traditional Sasak villages, waterfalls hidden in the jungle, and one of Indonesia's most rewarding volcano treks. The Gili Islands give you turquoise water, white sand, no motorised vehicles, and that barefoot, slow-paced island rhythm that makes you forget what day of the week it is.
You don't have to choose between mountains and ocean here. You get both.
Getting Between Lombok and the Gili Islands
The logistics are simpler than you might think. Here's how the connections work.
From Lombok International Airport
Lombok's airport (Praya) sits in the south of the island. From there, you have a few options:
- Direct fast boat transfer to the Gili Islands, arranged through your hotel or a transport company. This usually takes about 2 hours including the drive to the harbour and the boat crossing.
- Private car to Bangsal or Teluk Nara harbours (roughly 2 hours), then a public or charter boat to your chosen Gili island.
- Stay in Lombok first (Senggigi, Kuta Lombok, or Tetebatu), then take a boat to the Gilis later in your trip.
Between the Gili Islands
Island-hopping between Trawangan, Meno, and Air is easy. Public boats run regular routes, and private boat charters take about 5 to 10 minutes between islands. You can visit all three even if you're only based on one. Check our island hopping guide for current schedules and tips.
From Bali
If you're coming from Bali, fast boats run daily to the Gili Islands (about 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the operator and sea conditions). You can also fly from Bali to Lombok in about 25 minutes, which is a smart move if you want to start with the Lombok portion of your trip. See our full guide on getting to the Gili Islands for all the options.
How Many Days Do You Need?
It depends on your pace and what you want to prioritise. Here's a rough breakdown:
| Trip Length | Lombok Days | Gili Islands Days | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 days | 2 | 3 | Quick highlights, beach lovers |
| 7 days | 3 | 4 | Balanced trip, good mix of both |
| 10 days | 4 | 6 | Full experience, unhurried pace |
| 14 days | 5-6 | 8 | Deep exploration, all three islands |
My honest recommendation? Seven days is the sweet spot. You get enough time on Lombok to see the highlights without rushing, and enough time on the Gilis to properly relax and explore more than one island. If you only have five days, it still works, but you'll need to be more selective.
What to Do in Lombok: The Highlights
Lombok is Bali's quieter, wilder neighbour. The tourism infrastructure is growing but it still feels like discovering somewhere before the crowds arrive. Here are the spots worth your time.
South Lombok Beaches
The coastline around Kuta Lombok (not to be confused with Kuta in Bali) is stunning. Tanjung Aan is one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen, with two bays of powder-soft sand and shallow turquoise water. Selong Belanak is perfect for learning to surf, with gentle waves and board rentals right on the sand. Mawun Beach is tucked between two headlands and feels completely secluded, even during peak season.
Mount Rinjani
Indonesia's second-highest volcano towers over the entire island at 3,726 metres. A full summit trek takes 2 to 3 days and is one of the most rewarding hikes in Southeast Asia, with a crater lake that looks almost unreal from the rim. If you don't want the full summit push, shorter treks to the crater rim or to Sendang Gile waterfall near the base village of Senaru are equally beautiful and much less demanding.
Senggigi and the West Coast
Lombok's main tourist town sits along the west coast and makes a convenient base for your first or last night. The sunsets here are gorgeous, looking straight out toward Bali and the Gili Islands, and there are plenty of restaurants and beachfront bars to enjoy. It's also the easiest launch point for boats to the Gilis.
Traditional Sasak Villages
Take time to visit a traditional Sasak village like Sade or Ende. The Sasak people are Lombok's indigenous community, and their thatched-roof compounds and weaving traditions offer a genuine glimpse into local culture that you won't find on the Gili Islands. Most villages welcome visitors and you can watch artisans at work, weaving intricate textiles using methods passed down through generations.
What to Do on Each Gili Island
This is where the trip shifts gears entirely. No cars, no motorbikes, no stress. Just sand paths, bicycles, horse-drawn carts, and the kind of quiet that makes your shoulders drop about three inches within the first hour.
Gili Trawangan: The Social Island
Trawangan is the largest and liveliest of the three. This is where you'll find the best nightlife, the biggest selection of restaurants and bars, and a buzzing backpacker scene along the east coast. But Trawangan has more depth than its party reputation suggests. The west coast is peaceful and perfect for sunset watching, and the snorkelling just offshore is excellent. Rent a bicycle and ride the full island in about an hour and a half, stopping wherever something catches your eye.
Best for: Social travellers, nightlife lovers, first-timers who want plenty of options.
Gili Meno: The Unspoilt Paradise
Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest of the three, and honestly, it's the one that stays with you longest. This is a natural paradise in the truest sense. Think Maldives meets the Greek islands, but with Indonesian soul and warmth running through everything. The beaches along the west coast are some of the most beautiful in all of Indonesia, and the underwater world here is extraordinary. Sea turtles glide through the shallows almost daily, and the coral reefs are thriving thanks to ongoing conservation efforts.
For food lovers, Meno has quietly become one of the best dining destinations in the entire Gili archipelago. BASK is a luxury beachfront resort that has completely raised the bar for what's possible on a small Indonesian island. The open kitchen works with fire and flame, turning out wood-fired pizzas, flame-cooked steaks, and fresh fish delivered daily by local fishermen. The 35-metre infinity pool at the Beach Club overlooks the ocean, and the sunsets from here are the kind you don't scroll past. Below the resort, Rosalee is a hidden underground cocktail bar where drinks are crafted with real theatricality. Candlelight, unexpected flavour pairings, and a glass-lined pool wall that creates this beautiful, moody atmosphere you just have to see in person.
Just along the shore, Pomona brings Latin American soul to the island with bold, fire-cooked flavours and generous shared plates designed for long, unhurried meals. The entire menu is 100% gluten-free, with standout dishes like ceviche mixto, soft shell crab arepas, and a Peruvian-style chicken a la brasa that will ruin all other roast chicken for you. Their Sunday Beach BBQ (3pm to 8pm) is a weekly highlight, and Friday Pomona Sessions bring together food, drinks, and live music that keep the tables buzzing well into the evening.
Meno's world-class food scene is reason enough to build your trip around this island. Browse the full Gili Meno restaurant directory for more options, and check out our guide on where to eat on Gili Meno for detailed reviews.
Best for: Couples, honeymooners, foodies, anyone craving peace and beauty.
Gili Air: The Bohemian Retreat
Gili Air sits between Trawangan and Meno, both geographically and in character. It has a relaxed, community feel that attracts yoga practitioners, creative types, and travellers who want social energy without the party scene. The cafes here are excellent, the yoga studios are some of the best in the region, and the snorkelling off the east coast is superb. If you're interested in freediving, the schools on Air are particularly well-regarded.
Best for: Yoga lovers, digital nomads, travellers who want a mix of social and serene.
A Sample 7-Day Itinerary
Here's the route I'd recommend for a first-time combined trip.
Day 1: Arrive in Lombok, Head to Kuta Lombok Fly into Lombok airport, transfer south to Kuta Lombok. Settle in, grab dinner at a local warung, and catch the sunset from Tanjung Aan beach.
Day 2: Explore South Lombok's Coastline Morning surf lesson at Selong Belanak, afternoon at Mawun Beach. This stretch of coastline is worth a full day of exploring, so take your time and beach-hop at your own pace.
Day 3: North Lombok and Transfer to Gili Air Drive through Lombok's interior, stopping at Benang Stokel waterfall if time allows. Take a boat from Bangsal or Teluk Nara to Gili Air. Spend the afternoon settling in and exploring the village on foot.
Day 4: Gili Air Morning yoga session, snorkelling off the east coast, long lunch at a beachfront cafe. Explore the island by bicycle in the late afternoon, then find a good spot for sunset drinks.
Day 5: Gili Meno Boat to Meno (5 minutes from Air). Spend the morning snorkelling with turtles and exploring the underwater sculpture garden. Lunch at Pomona, sharing plates of ceviche and arepas with your feet practically in the sand. Afternoon by the infinity pool at BASK's Beach Club. Stay for sunset and dinner at BASK, then finish the evening at Rosalee with a cocktail or two.
Day 6: Gili Trawangan Boat to Trawangan. Rent a bike and ride the full island, stopping at the hilltop viewpoint on the west coast for sunset. Explore the night market for street food, then check out the bar scene along the main strip.
Day 7: Final Morning and Departure Last swim and breakfast on whichever island you're based on. Catch a fast boat back to Lombok airport, or take a direct boat to Bali if that's your next stop.
Want to extend the trip? Add an extra day on Gili Meno to truly unwind, or spend a day on Trawangan doing a PADI course. If you have more time on Lombok, a 2-day Rinjani trek before heading to the Gilis will add a completely different dimension to the trip.
Practical Tips for Your Combined Trip
Budget: Lombok is generally cheaper than the Gili Islands for accommodation and food. A mid-range combined trip runs roughly $80 to $150 per day per person including accommodation, meals, activities, and transport. Luxury options, especially on Gili Meno, will push that higher. See our trip cost guide for a detailed breakdown.
Best time to go: The dry season from May to September offers the best weather for both Lombok and the Gili Islands. July and August are peak season, so book accommodation early. The shoulder months of April, May, September, and October bring great weather with fewer crowds. Read our full best time to visit guide for month-by-month details.
What to pack: Light, breathable clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, a good snorkel mask (rentals are fine but your own is always better), and a dry bag for boat transfers. You'll want sturdy shoes for Lombok's waterfalls and treks, plus flip-flops for the Gilis where shoes are basically decorative. Check our complete packing list for everything else.
Money: ATMs are available on Gili Trawangan and in Lombok's main towns. Gili Meno and Gili Air have limited ATM access, so withdraw enough cash before heading to the smaller islands. Many restaurants and hotels accept cards, but cash is still essential for smaller purchases and boat fares. Our money guide covers everything you need to know.
Health and safety: Bring mosquito repellent, especially for Lombok's interior where it's lusher and more tropical. The nearest hospital is in Mataram, Lombok's capital. Read our health and safety guide before you go.
Start Planning Your Trip
